Our Work

Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)

Access to clean water is a cornerstone of health and dignity.

FSA pioneers climate-resilient, solar-powered water systems that serve both people and livestock. Alongside infrastructure, we promote hygiene awareness and market-based sanitation solutions—empowering communities to maintain better health and resilience.

Key Achievements:

  • 18 solar water systems serving 131,496 people and 418,753 livestock

  • 28 water points, 40 cattle troughs, and 13.7 km of distribution lines

  • Hygiene promotion and climate-smart WASH education across Afar

Health

Healthcare remains a critical need across Afar’s remote communities.
FSA bridges the gap with mobile outreach, vaccination programs, maternal care, and nutrition education—ensuring that no child is left unvaccinated and every mother has access to safe childbirth services.

Highlights:

  • 33,476 “zero-dose” children reached with vaccines

  • 119 supported health facilities across 22 woredas

  • Over 74,000 people reached with lifesaving health activities

Gender Empowerment

In a region where women’s roles are often limited by tradition, FSA helps women and girls unlock their potential.
Through savings groups, vocational training, and advocacy for reproductive health, women gain the confidence and resources to build better futures.

Impact:

  • 3,862 VSLAs formed with 24,160 members

  • 3,464 women supported in small businesses

  • Adolescent girls trained in sexual and reproductive health

Resilience & Livelihoods

Climate shocks threaten food security and livelihoods.

FSA promotes nutrition-sensitive agriculture, drought-resistant crops, and rangeland rehabilitation to help communities adapt. By restoring 380+ hectares of grazing land and promoting fodder crops, we strengthen both ecosystems and incomes.

Core Activities:

  • Moringa tree planting for climate adaptation

  • Fodder production and adaptive grass cultivation

  • Crop diversification through small-scale irrigation

Education

Education transforms lives—but many Afar children, especially girls, still face barriers to learning.

FSA builds and renovates schools, provides learning materials, and supports adult literacy programs. Through our Desert Child Sponsorship Program, children receive the support they need to stay in school and dream bigger.

Achievements:

  • 10 permanent school blocks built or renovated

  • 90+ temporary learning centers established

  • Thousands of children supported through sponsorship and community learning

Peacebuilding

Conflict over water and grazing land remains a major barrier to stability.
FSA revives traditional mediation systems and fosters dialogue between clans and neighboring regions. Through continuous peace conversations and reconciliation meetings, we build trust and cooperation across borders.

Peace Initiatives:

  • Regular community peace dialogues

  • Inter-regional peace conferences (Afar–Amhara, Afar–Oromia)

  • Reconciliation events restoring livelihoods and relationships

Humanitarian Assistance & Recovery

When crisis strikes, FSA acts fast.
From food distribution to livestock vaccination and restocking, we help families recover their livelihoods and rebuild hope after drought, conflict, and displacement.

Emergency Response Highlights:

  • 11,346 people supported with food

  • 587,135 animals vaccinated

  • 15,940 goats distributed for restocking

  • Monitoring of 233 food distribution sites for WFP
